Words of power, or weret-hakau, are the words and phrases—spoken or written—that invoke and control the power of heka magic. For the Kemetic peoples, written language was powerful and potentially as dangerous as the spoken word. In fact, it’s documented that hieroglyphs of dangerous animals like the crocodile (ı͗t) were often purposely altered to diminish their power, to prevent them from magically coming to life.
