Threshold guardians are beings who guard boundaries between the physical world and the spiritual world. Their main purpose is to prevent unworthy mortals from entering the spiritual world, and to keep spirits from escaping into the physical world. Threshold guardians serve primarily as a means of testing the hero’s character and commitment to the journey. They may be defeated in a variety of ways: by trickery, completing physical or mental challenges, through the use of magic, or, in some cases, by physical force. Often, defeated threshold guardians become useful allies to the traveler.
